Diagnose it
Generator or transfer switch?
If your generator runs but the power stays off, the switch is the first suspect. Here's what each symptom usually means.
Generator runs. Power stays off.
The generator got the start signal, so the switch didn't move the load. Contactor, operator, solenoid or control board.
Power's back. Generator won't stop.
The switch didn't retransfer, or the cool-down signal never cleared. Usually a control or sensing fault.
Outage hits. Generator never starts.
The switch never called for it. Check the start circuit, control wiring and controller before blaming the engine.
Clicking, buzzing, chattering.
A contactor or relay that can't hold in. Low control voltage, a failing coil or worn contacts.
Burn marks or a hot smell.
Loose or overheated terminations. Stop using the circuit and call. This one gets worse fast.
Water, rust or bugs inside.
Moisture and insects kill boards and contactors. Often the reason to replace instead of repair.

Common questions
Straight answers.
What does an automatic transfer switch do?
It watches utility power. When utility power drops, it tells the generator to start, then moves your load to the generator. When utility power comes back, it moves the load back and lets the generator cool down and shut off.
How do I know my transfer switch is the problem and not the generator?
If the generator starts and runs but the lights stay off, or the power comes back and the generator keeps running, the switch or its control wiring is the first suspect. We test both before quoting.
Can you repair it instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. Contactors, control boards, solenoids and lugs can be replaced on many switches. We'll give you a repair price and a replacement price when both make sense.
How much does transfer switch replacement cost?
It depends on amperage, residential or commercial, indoor or outdoor, service-entrance rating, and how much wiring changes. We give a written quote after we see the switch.
Do you work on every brand?
We service ASCO, Thomson, Generac, Kohler, Eaton, Cummins, Briggs & Stratton, Champion, Zenith, Russelectric, Caterpillar, Siemens, Square D, Reliance, Westinghouse and others. We are an independent service company and are not claiming to be a factory-authorized dealer for these brands.
